Presidents Message
The
May outing was to the Husker claim between Sturgis and Deadwood South
Dakota.
12
members showed up that I saw most all were members of the Wausau club with 7
also being members in the Tomah club. There was no running water in creek at
the husker claim. There was two spots were you could get some water out of
holes already dug in the creek bottom. I managed to find 46 pieces of gold
most of the very small, and I probably found the most of everyone. Some
members stayed in the Sturgis Rv Park and metal detected there. Brian (I
don't know his last name) Found a 1carot gold ring and a pair of earrings on
the camp grounds. Most found bottle caps and some small change. Chris Bung
was metal detecting at the claim and found a lead nugget painted gold for a
momentary bit of excitement. I for one fossil of a shell and Kurt and I each
found some vugs with small crystals in them.
Kurt
and Barb Bubliz, Gayle and I took the Hamestake mine tour, which is really a
tour of the town and a history lesson. The mine closed in 1990 when the
price of gold fell to $300 before that it employed upwards of 2000 miners
working two shifts. It reached
a depth of 8000 ft. at which depth it is 130 degrees and needed
air-conditioning to make it workable. In the 1970's they opened up a pit
that was 1/2 a mile wide and 1 mile long and over 2 thousand feet deep when
the mine closed. You can still see the mine today. We also toured the Black
Hill Mining Museum in Lead. It reenacts how the miners worked in the
Homestake. It is just a little ways down the road from the mine. It was a
good tour.
Lead
is one mile high and it was snowing the day we were there. There also was
snow all the way down to the Husker claim that morning but it was just
raining in Sturgis.
We also took a tour of the 76
western museum in Deadwood that day. Deadwood has expanded since I was there
9 years ago more hotels and a new visitors center that was going to open
memorial weekend.
On Sunday afternoon when I was tired
of panning, we tour a petrified forest not far from Sturgis. We got a
geology lesson with our tour. It was pretty interesting while we were there
it hailed. And before we left I saw a Merriam turkey my first ever.
On
the way home we stopped in Wall, it is interesting but mostly a tourist
trap. We then went thru the Badland National park, Beautiful hills but Gayle
says when you see two or three they all look the same, I would have stayed
longer myself but it was still a long ways home. While we were there we say
several mountain goats and there babys. We all held our breath as them
walked down a hill that had to be at least an 80 degree angle. No way could
I have gone down it.
Next month June 17 is our annual
Nugget Lake outing. There was a lot of flooding there after our outing last
year I'm anxious to see how the stream has changed I'v seen some good gold
from some posts on Facebook since the flood. Bring a dish to pass for the
pot luck. I am in camp site 55 this year that is right out front. It is $5 a
car load to enter the park we will be at the large pavilion be the lake at
11:00 meal at 12:00.
There
are some gold shows coming up soon. I have the information on one and am
waiting on info for one in northern Minnesota, I believe its in Tower MN not
far from Orr, MN near the Canadian border.
Remember July is an outing to muskellunge Lake Michigan in the UP. Hope some
of you can make it there was gold in the black sands on the beach last time
I was there.
See you in the creeks Mike Fait
