Gold Fever!!!

Tomah Wisconsin GPAA Chapter – May 2017

Welcome to the 2017 GOLD FEVER Newsletter.  Another year, another gold prospecting opportunity.  If you have not tried to find gold, you need to give it a try.  Let us know if you need help to get started, there are many people with experience that the help you.

Do not forget the Newsletter and pictures can always be found at:

President’s Message

There will be no more indoor meetings until at least August, and probably not until September.

Next month we are going to South Dakota to the Husker claim. I have a hotel room in Sturgis at the Super 8. I would be interested in sharing a room if anyone else is interested. Or you can get your own room or camp with the rest of the diggers either on the claim for free or in Sturgis at the Days end campground and RV Park - 2501 Avalanche Road Sturgis SD. 57785  phone 605-347-2331  Contact person for the outing is Kurt Bublitz Wausau president 715-340-2831.

Then in October we will be going to the gold show in Indianapolis instead of having a meeting. Richard is looking into getting a van/bus capable of carrying up to 15 people. If you are interested in going let me know thou it is a long ways off I am trying to get an idea how many people we might have and the best way to travel. Also we would need hotel rooms for possibly two nights. Right now I’m thinking we would leave in the morning of October 21 get to the show in the afternoon for the end of the day drawings. Then return on Sunday to see the rest of the show and the Sunday drawings which have less people at them. Then either return on Monday or come back Sunday night. It is a minimum of 6.5 hrs to drive from Tomah to Indianapolis without stops. With stops ’m and a meal I’m thinking 7.5 or 8 hrs. Plus however long it takes to get from your home to the pickup point. It could be in Viroqua. That’s why I am leaning on the Monday return I would have to take a days’ vacation on Monday but I wouldn't be getting home until 2 am if we left Sunday night.

Hope to see some of you there. Mike Fait

There are no outdoor toilets at the claim so provide your own. Bring your own meals and beverages, and clean up after yourself. Do not cut into the banks while Prospecting and fill in your holes. Take out your trash when you leave. This Outing is to provide a common area for the club to meet and enjoy prospecting together. Plan on a stop at the town of Wall South Dakota. The National Grassland Visitor Center is located in Wall. There you can get information on rock & mineral hunting in the Buffalo Gap National Grassland. Be sure to check out the town of Deadwood and Mount Rushmore too.

Directions to Husker #1: Located 5 ½ Miles west of Sturgis on HWY 14A and 5 ½ miles east of Deadwood on 14A. Going west on 14A you will turn off to your left just past the US Forest Service sign (Black Hills National Forest). Coming East from Deadwood there is no sign so you should watch you odometer. The claim is about 800 feet down the road to the first creek crossing (Sign is in tree above the creek and to the left). Other GPAA claims in the Black Hills area are Migg 1 to 4, Rainbow, and Mary Ann. You must be a GPAA member or with a GPAA member (as a guest) to use those claims.

Husker #1 GPS Coordinates:

Do not prospect on the claims belonging to the Black Hills Prospecting Club. If caught prospecting on their claims you will be arrested for mineral trespass! The Black Hills Prospecting Club claims are The Garnet Area Claims, Park Placer, and BF #1. Stay off these claims!

Club members will be staying at the Days End Campground and RV Park in Sturgis South Dakota. There are also Cabins and Tent sites available at the campground.  The campground offers ample facilities and amenities. Most members will be camping between sites 14 through site 23.
